Arrows and Targets

Visited Mike Cope’s blog  this
morning and he had a picture of the candlelight devotional at
ACU.  That got me to thinking about my boys again (not a difficult
thing to do these first days of Kindergarten).  What will they be
like that first week of college?  What will they look like — my
boys as men?  What will their voices sound like?  What path
will God lead them down?  What girl out there right now will be my
future daughter-in-law (how scary is that?)?

Psalm 127 says: Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a
reward from him.  Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons
born in one’s youth.  Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of
them.

“Like arrows in the hands of a warrior…”  That’s the kind of
relationship I want with those two little boys.  I want to know
them so well that I can help direct and guide them to their
target.  I want to be so familiar with them that when they leave
my “quiver” I am confident of the path that they will take.  I
know that there are obstacled they’ll have to contend with on the
way…things that will try to knock them off target.  But my daily
prayer is that they will know that I am blessed by them and that they
are to be a blessing to the world they live in.  I also pray that
I don’t get so caught up in myself and the stuff of adulthood that I
forget to spend some time with them doing target practice!

Enjoy the Journey!
